Have you ever taken the time to see the sights that your town as to offer? I recently had a friend come into town who has never left the South. I was beyond thrilled to plan her first trip to Philadelphia. I had three days to show her all Philadelphia and the surrounding area had to offer. It was not nearly enough time to see all the highlights but we did hit some great spots.
- We took a historic walking tour through Old City, stopped at Betsy Ross’ House, and what a delight when we realized she was live in-person able to answer questions about that time. (wink) Did you know it is not actually a proven fact she made the American Flag? It is believed it was her because she was the best seamstress in the land.
- We stopped at the famous graveyard where not only is Benjamin Franklin buried, but so are three other Constitution signers. Did you know travelers throw pennies on his grave daily? The pennies actually pay for the maintenance of the cemetery. His grave makes $40,000 a year!
- We ran through Reading Terminal Market to purchase a Shoofly Pie. The hustle and bustle of that market any time of day is amazing, not to mention all the good eats.
- We headed up to Peddler’s Village, saw the scarecrow festival, and had to ride the famous carousel. What a quaint little town right in the heart of Bucks County. Did you know that the carousel is a fully restored 1922 Carousel from Philadelphia Toboggan Company?
- We walked the bridge from New Hope into Lambertville and had an amazing lunch at the Famous Lambertville Station.
- We drove through Valley Forge Park and made a stop into George Washington’s house. Did you know most of the furniture in that house are replicas?
It is amazing what you can learn by just becoming a tourist in your own town!
