The Birthday Girl

Today is my mom’s birthday. She is a woman worth celebrating, no different than your mom. With that said, my mom has seen hardship like no other, and glorious times people dream of experiencing. Part of her story is also mine, so I will only share that. My mother’s first marriage was with an Irish man, who also happened to be a drunk. He was keen with all his words and quick to temper. He showed his emotion on his sleeve and you were afraid of the outcome.

I recently heard someone describe a person as a Florida afternoon- sunny with a chance of showers. That is a great description of a person with substance abuse. You never know which personality is showing up. My mother and I survived that person, moving on with our lives. She found the love of her life and has lived the last 31 years in sheer bliss.

She is my example of a better tomorrow.  We are never our current circumstance; there is always something around the corner to bring us joy. You just have to seek it, be open to it and share it!
