We were recently having dinner and talking about work and sharing team challenges, whether it is project team dynamics, or helping new team members get up to speed on the job. Delaney lingered at the dinner table that night, listening to Jarrod and I share stories, and at one point, I turned to her and said, “What do you think?” She was quick with her answer.
“If you are on a team, everyone has to win, and you have an obligation to make that happen.”
Ok, that was profound and true. So then I started to ask her more questions to see how she would react. “What if the team does not get along, what if one person is not doing their share, etc?” She was so convicted, it was so black and white, if you’re on a team, you have to help everyone achieve. It did not matter what problem I put in front of her. All that mattered was the word, TEAM, and what that meant to each person participating.
I have been in the corporate world for many years and served on various committees and boards. We all know the rules, but it would be so nice if we all reminded ourselves each day what TEAM means. If that is the object we all focus on while achieving our goal, all the other noise goes away.
Very true. So insightful and mature. Throw in a little kindness and we have a win!
