We did a family challenge a few Sundays ago. We all agreed it would add some spice to our life and surely give us something to share as a family unit. The challenge was no electronics one whole day- yup- I said it- One Whole Day. No TV, no texting, no Facebook, no gaming, no computers.
We unplugged on a Sunday. I thought easy win as Sunday mornings are filled with church and typically a mid-day family meal, so I was thinking that will take up a good portion of the day, we all will adjust just fine. WRONG- the girls did make themselves busy for about 4 hours, playing with dolls, playing school, even reading like Jarrod and I were doing in the living room. As the hours went on, Deanna convinced Delaney that if they both caved, it is not really losing. In her mind, losing together was winning because if they caved, they could get back on electronics together.
Temptation gave in around 6pm and they both marched in the living room declaring they no longer wanted to participate in the challenge. Smiling, they were fine with it, not one of them was a loser and they were excited how they were going to spend the evening.
In case you’re wondering: I loved unplug day, I found it to be very rejuvenating, there was no noise and it was peaceful.
When was the last time you created a challenge with the family?
Great suggestion! I’d love a day of just music in the house, no t.v. or computer or phones. Instrumental or something to sing along, holiday music is great for this and brings back so many wonderful memories hearing the songs of Christmas’s past.
