Just me?

What a hard week for the US to see unfold. Like most of you, I know one or more people in the midst of living with their new life, whatever that means. Whether that is figuring out what it means for their college student whose school is barely standing, a friend whose art gallery and whole town no longer exists, or a friend who lost everything he and his family ever collected.  It is too much.

It is impossible to understand the actual feeling they all have but at the same time it is a horrible feeling knowing what they are going through and we can’t change it.   We never want our worst enemy to experience extreme pain let alone those we love. These are moments that change people forever.   Nobody wishes horrible outcomes for others, and this feels crueler than imaginable.

(Side note: In our home, this debunked a truth we had- the Carolina mountains are safe from hurricanes.  I never wanted a debunk to mean destruction for those we love or our retirement plans.)

So, you might be asking, where do we go from here? I don’t have all the answers, just the ones that work for me. Here is my list:

  1. Pray—Pray for their safety and for their new future to show up quickly. YES, it works. Prayer is strong and has a universal pull. It can also provide comfort and faith in what the future looks like.
  2. Find the gofundme pages and donate
  3. Donate to the Red Cross
  4. Call and offer an ear to listen and understand
  5. Buy the stickers and bracelets, and plan a trip to visit the towns in the coming future, the towns will need your money to recover and move on
  6. Last, and just as important, thank the Lord you are safe and have the means to help those in needs
