Joy

They say age is just a number, right? We often hear 60 is the new 50, and 70 is the new 60. We talk about how the girls are growing up too fast, they are 14 wanting to be 18, they are 10 acting like 14. It goes on and on. I have been watching my girls grow older as I have been watching my parents grow older. Here are some of the truths I am seeing about the key to aging healthy:

My dad is a young 75, and he still works part-time as a dentist, not just any dentist; his best days at work are those that include many surgeries; he doesn’t want to look in a mouth and do a checkup.

He also flies planes for fun a few times a month and now plays cards and the pool game every week. Most of all, he is happier than I ever remember in my life.  I attest that happiness is the balance of life.  Dad is finding joy beyond work and our family.  He is excited to jump out of bed to go to work, do his activities, and see his grandchildren.

Growing up, Dad worked long hours and was always tired. It was rare that he laughed or looked like he was filled with joy, but now, with balance, I see joy all the time when I am around my dad.

So, a larger lesson at my stage of life is that joy and balance are just as important as working tirelessly. I am blessed enough to know I need both in my life and do my best whether I am traveling for work or home with the family to create joyful moments in the everyday. I hope you are doing the same.
