Wise Man’s Advice

A dear friend, who also guides me in my thinking as I progress in my career and honestly manage my way through life, gave me advice a few months back that has changed my daily habits for the better. It is time I share it with you. It was a time I was burned out, ready for an escape. I had some time away planned, and I was told, While away, take notice of what you are doing that brings you the most joy, write it down, and figure out how to weave it into your normal every day once your escape is over.

What brings me joy is easy, long walks, reading, and taking in the fresh air. Like many of you, the challenge is that the day becomes very quickly about all other obligations: making lunches, getting the girls out the door, replying to emails, and caring for the dog. I knew he was right if I wanted to stay sane till my next escape was planned, so I committed to waking up earlier than I had in the past and added 25 minutes of reading to my morning routine. I also take at least 1 hour to sit outside with my laptop or on calls. It has been life-altering to my calmness and the feeling of accomplishment each day.

When I sit down in the morning for that 25-minute reading session, I set my alarm and leave my phone far away from me. It doesn’t matter if I am reading a book about career growth or a beach read; I walk away feeling so much joy; it is like the extra sprinkles on a sundae.

Find your joy each day, don’t wait till you escape.
