This past weekend was beautiful, somewhere in the 70’s, and sunny. A February day like this is just a small little blessing from heaven.
My normal Saturday is typically the gym, grocery shopping, cleaning the house, starting the wash, and then making dinner to finally relax. I am sure this sounds familiar for many of you too. I have a wise family member, MeMaw, who constantly reminds me, “Don’t worry about the house and the chores. Spend time with the kids.” This can be a difficult task; to stop my schedule, let my list wait, let the house go, but what an amazing feeling when I finally let go and followed her advice.
This Saturday morning, after relaxing outside reading my favorite magazine while the girls ran around, I contacted a friend, asking to borrow her son for a few hours and we ventured off to the local park. In my children’s’ humble opinion, adventures are that much more special when you bring a friend along.
This particular park has trials all around the playground area so Jarrod and I took turns running around the trails and playing with the kiddos. At one point, I stopped being me and totally became a kid again. So instead of a mom pushing swings and walking around, I let Deanna, age five, tell me where to run, what slide to ride, and what bridge to cross. I am not going to lie, it was FUN! It was liberating to let go, even if for a few minutes. I swear Deanna’s laugh, from deep in her belly, was even more rewarding – her smile was wider and her mood was higher than just playing with the kids.
So when the weather gives you a gift like this, stop your norm and embrace the day as a kid. I promise you won’t mind that you’re finishing your chores late Sunday night before the hustle and bustle of the week begins.
