Girl Power

My little one attended a series of classes with all the girls in her class called “Girl Power.” At the start of the class, the teacher had each girl take a pre-assessment on how they feel about themselves, establishing friends, and maintaining friends. After each question, you could select the following answers: always, sometimes, or not so much. At the end of the class, the girls took a post assessment answering the same questions.

It got me thinking: as adults could we do a pre-assessment in the beginning of the year and then fill out a post assessment at the end of year? Or even if we did quarterly or bi-annually?  If we did, would our answers be the same? What questions would we ask that would help us determine if we were being our best self? For us, I think the questions are more around ourselves and what makes up our bubble: religion, family, work and friends.

Here are some questions I found fitting for my self-check.  You’re welcome to add or take away if you choose to take the assessment yourself:

Do I like myself?   Do I have self-care built into my weekly routine? Am I happy? Am I stressed regularly? Am I finding time to be with God? Am I drinking too much wine? Am I eating enough vegetables?  Am I showing compassion always to others?  Am I graceful in a disagreement?  Am I spending quality time with my husband? Am I spending quality time with my children? And lastly, do I feel fulfilled?

I believe if any of the answers are “not so much”, there is some work to take on to adjust your perspective or situation. If some of the answers are “sometimes”, you might need to evaluate what is happening and make some minor adjustments.

Self-reflection is just a part of being honest with yourself. And let’s be honest, if you are not happy or struggling, how can you be your best self to anyone else around you?
