Ice Cream

I think naturally people want to control what is happening around them. When it comes to parenting, we are flooded with dos and don’ts on a regular basis. As I get older and the girls get older, I find myself entering into a more relaxing parenting approach. Let me explain what I mean by that.

At the beginning of the day, I anticipate beds are made, banana and vitamins are eaten and teeth are brushed before we walk out the door. At the end of a school day, I expect homework done and showers completed before the fun begins. We have a routine and it works. Everyone does their part.

On occasion though, one of the girls will request a mix up and on this morning, that is what happened; let me explain.

All week leading up to the last day of school we were talking about how we were going to celebrate. It was a long year and everyone was ready for fun. When the morning arrived, and the girls came out for breakfast. I said, “what do y’all want for breakfast,” Delaney said with a giggle at the end, “Ice Cream!” Without a pause, I said, “Sounds good, what flavor, how many scoops?” As I was pulling the gallons of ice cream out of the fridge and getting the sundae cups, you could see the girls’ eyes light up in disbelief as they were actually getting ice cream for breakfast.

In my more controlling years, I would have frowned and gave a look of disbelief. But on that day, I knew ice cream was exactly what was for breakfast. We were celebrating, and we needed to have a celebration breakfast.

Thought of the week- When a moment presents itself that is a bit daring, are you jumping?
