4th Grade YearBook

Another year in the books. Deanna is headed to fifth grade. The desire to want a yearbook at a young age has always felt a little silly to me, until this year. Deanna’s school is being ripped down as they have built a new improved school behind the old. She is the last class to ever walk those halls, all those memories, all those students…. The school opened its doors in 1974, the same year I was born. Maybe that is where the appreciation for the yearbook comes in…..the teachers are feeling the memories of years spent as next year is not just a new class or a new year but a full new chapter.

Deanna was eager to share what the teachers wrote below their pictures. My favorite of all the messages came from her teacher and it said, “Remember POWER OF WORDS.” Yes, it was in Caps. I was instantly interested to learn more. What Ms. Craig has been trying to teach the children all year is the difference between if or when. Here are a few examples: If I get into the dance class vs when I get into dance class. If I get invited to when I get invited. If I excel at math to when I excel at math. You get where I am going…..

This is a lesson we all can hear, there is so much power in the words that come out of our mouths. As they leave your lips, imagine the future is being scripted. If you changed what you said to WHEN rather than IF, how different would your future be?
