If you have children I am sure you know what I am about to say. We can give them all the guidance in the world but there will be times when they just won’t listen because they know better. This past week I took the girls and two of their friends to the beach for two days, to celebrate the start of the summer. Deanna and her friend wanted to buy hermit crabs. The gentlemen was so kind, he let them have two for the price of one. (thank you for your generosity, I didn’t want one, but now have two!) While we were at the beach the two girls loved sitting with the crabs and letting them roam around them on the floor.
When we got home, J took one look and reminded Deanna to leave the lid locked, we don’t want to let one lose. The next morning, the unthinkable happened. She comes down the stairs to my office as I am working, crying uncontrollably, one had escaped. After getting confirmation her bedroom door was closed because honestly if he is lost, let’s contain him in one room, I calmed her down. We will find him, he can’t be far.
Now some of you might remember from previous posts, Deanna is a hoarder, said with so much love. So to say the search for the crab would be easy is a mild joke. She searched for 30 minutes and nothing. When she left for the pool, I did what any good working mom would do. I texted Delaney, “Wanna make some $?” She wrote back, “Find the crab? On it!” Well, that mission failed after another 30 minutes. It was my turn, in between meetings to search for our beloved crab named Sparkle. Meanwhile every so often Deanna is texting asking a simple question, “Anything?”
We did find Sparkle, hanging from her drape, way into the late afternoon. The day was filled with excitement, nervousness, and a simple quest, and all day long I had a smile inside because I knew we were making a fun memory and Deanna learned on her own the lesson we attempted to teach.
Appreciate the mess and the memories. Have fun.
Sam put her hermit crab, Hermy Shellvin, outside for some fresh air. He escaped too! We found him while mulching the flower beds many years later!! Ps…your girls are getting so big and they are so cute!
